Web Apps for Infused Lessons

5:47 AM

Today, I have been given the opportunity to present to our secondary teachers in CISD. I have been given the course title: Web Apps for Infused Lessons. We are an extremely technology rich district, at the secondary level our students are 1 to 1 with netbooks. I am continually on the hunt to find new applications for our teachers and students to use to deepen understanding of curriculum, but given such a broad title, I did struggle to narrow in on just a few applications to share... so...

What is a Web 2.0 app? Collaboration!

Where is my favorite place to go to find out what the latest and greatest tools are? Larry Ferlazzo's: The Best Web 2.0 Applications for Education In 2014 - So Far

I will be adding the applications listed below to our CISD Symbaloo pages (hopefully by Friday).

Here are a few Web 2.0 Applications and some tidbits about each from Mr. Larry Ferlazzo himself:

Video Conferencing
1. Appear.in this is a super-simple video conferencing site for up to eight people, allows for screen share and does not require registration just a link for each room.

Presentations
2. slidebean easily create online slideshows, provides multiple formats and the ability to search the Web, withing the application, for images

3. Tapestry is both an online tool and an app that has multiple story-making tools. You can read more about it at TechCrunch.

Flipped Learning
4. Zaption a useful tool for creating interactive (answer open ended questions and multiple choice responses) videos for students.

Reading
5. Booktrack Classroom has books in the public domain online to which they have added "soundtracks" - music, street sounds, etc. In addtion, students can create their own soundtracks to books that they write. Even better, teachers can create virtural classrooms with assigned readings and/or to share their own creations. And, best of all, it's free. You can read many of the books without having to register, but must do so in order to create them.

Flash Cards and Mind Maps
6. ExamTime is a sort of a flashcard site on steroids that provides a number of other tools... just check it out!

Which of Larry's top apps grabbed your attention and you can see you and your students implementing? (please comment below)

  3. Examtime will be an excellent tool for review and testing. The student can create their own review tool, complete with visuals, that covers the content needed.

  4. I love the idea of using Appear in to assist my students in transition from one environment to the next. Thank you for introducing a way to help make the change from elementary to middle school so much smoother for our students!! AM

  5. I liked the mind map app examtime. I have used other mind maps in the past that were not as useful, reliable with too many options so I like the simplicity of exam time.

I'm also interested to see what kind of science videos are on zaption.

  6. I think that the app that I will most likely use first is zaption; I am trying to move toward a more flipped classroom, and this seems like an easier, more gradual approach. I like that you can assess the students as they watch the lesson. I also like booktack - it's just cool.

  7. I really like Zaption. It would allow each student to go through the lesson at their own pace. My favorite part is that each student would have to answer the HOT questions; instead of asking the question as a class and only a few students answering or students coping each other.

  10. Zaption sounds like a great way to add those extra things or correct misconceptions in the short video clips that students watch. Tapestry seems interesting I will try to see if I can get it to work.

  11. I liked the the idea of using Zaption in flipped learning. I like the features that allow for quick editing as well as ensuring that students are actively engaged in what they are watching online. The fact that it's streaming-only and not downloadable is something for me to keep in mind as I see using this as an in-class setting more than a homework piece. It's something to play around with, at least. Thanks for sharing.

  19. I will be able to use several web apps that were presented today, however, Exam Time will be the most useful web app for my students that are in my Inclusion and or resource classes. Great tool for studying and reviewing concepts and vocabulary.
